Liverpool are reportedly keen on bringing Manchester City defender Micah Richards to Anfield this summer. The England international is out of contract next summer and he has made clear that he will not be signing a new contract with City. After being first-team regular only a few seasons ago, the form of Pablo Zabaleta has seen him constantly waiting on the sidelines for game time. As a result, he has also lost his place in the England national team in the last few years. Keen to kickstart his career once again, Richards is looking to move to a club where he will play regularly.
Recognising that he will be available for a nominal transfer fee, Liverpool are looking to take advantage of the situation. Brendan Rodgers has reportedly made him a key transfer target as the new season fast approaches. Liverpool have already signed City defenders in the past with mixed results. Kolo Toure came to the club last summer on a free transfer. After being a regular in the first half of the season, he lost his place after committing several high-profile mistakes. Even if Richards comes to Anfield, he is more likely to be a squad player.
Rodgers can take advantage of his versatility, as Richards can play at right back or centre back. At just 26 years of age, he is at the prime of his career and Liverpool can easily look at getting out five or six years from him. City are almost certain to sell Richards this summer. The arrival of Bacary Sagna on a free transfer further intensifies the competition for right back places. City are also expected to sign a few central defenders in the next few weeks. Liverpool also face competition from the likes of Newcastle United, who will be able to offer regular football.
